The Phone Call That Sounds Real — But Isn't

AI voice scams in 2026 sound exactly like real humans on the phone. This is not an exaggeration, the robotic delivery, the bad accent, the obvious tells that people have been trained to listen for are gone. Modern AI voice technology replicates natural human speech patterns, tone, and pacing with near-perfect accuracy.

What this means: almost all existing scam call awareness advice is now out of date.

The scale of the problem in Australia

According to the ACCC's 2025 Targeting Scams Report, Australians reported combined losses of $2.18 billion to scams in 2025 — an increase of 7.8 per cent on the previous year. Phone-based scams remain among the most financially damaging. In 2024, phone scams had the highest overall losses of any contact method, with $107.2 million reported lost. And in the first four months of 2025 alone, phone scams accounted for $25.8 million in losses, still the highest of any contact method, despite an 11 per cent drop in reports.

What no longer works as a warning sign

  • A robotic or unnatural voice
  • A heavy or unfamiliar accent
  • Awkward pauses or scripted delivery
  • Poor grammar or unusual phrasing

These were reliable indicators of a scam call as recently as 2023. In 2026, they are not.

What does work: the one rule that holds

Hang up. Find the official contact number yourself. Call back independently.

It does not matter how professional the caller sounds. It does not matter if they know your name, your account details, or your organisation's internal terminology. A legitimate organisation will never penalise you for hanging up to verify.

How to protect your organisation

Security awareness training that pre-dates 2024 should be reviewed and updated. Employees need to understand that voice alone is no longer a reliable trust signal, and that call-back verification is the new standard, not an optional extra.
